Structural Color Expression Due to Specular Reflection from Bird Feathers

In order to clarify the relationship between structural color and nanolevel structure of bird feathers, cortical thin-film structure, shape melanin granules, their arrangement were observed using transmission electron microscopy. The reflection spectra calculated based on microscopic image data Fresnel's equation simulate a interference Bragg's law photonic crystal, then compared with actual spectra. simulation very similar from dove mallard feathers. each part eye-spot pattern peacock feathers both equations. cortex three-dimensional crystal consisting lattice rod-shaped granules fused further enhance selectivity.
